Chapter 13
The following morning started brightly, the sun rising early and filling Fort William with the joy of summer. Hope had decided to get out early for a run and the only downer on the morning was that Jona was too tired to accompany her. Her friend and colleague was under severe stress from her workload and their moments to speak had been few and far between. In typical fashion, Jona Nakamura was hiding the tension well and had a serene look to her but the eyes were showing a fatigue that Jona never had in normal times.
Hope accelerated her pace for the last mile of her run, driving her legs hard and letting the oxygen pump through her lungs. It was good to feel this free, this alive, especially when she was up against a mental block in this case. It was also strange working underneath the umbrella of other units, namely the terrorist branch. Normally Macleod would have an almost-free rein in solving a case, his experience counting for so much to his superiors. His success rate was also a key factor but the teams from the south did not know him that way and the entire Inverness team felt like small cogs in an enormous wheel.
As Hope reached the hotel and started to slow down, she saw Ross emerging from the front door to shake hands with a greying man in his forties. As ever, Ross was smooth and professional as he accompanied the man inside the building and Hope took a moment to sit on a wooden bench in the grounds of the hotel. Sweat dripped off her and the Lycra she wore clung tight to her skin. Her idea that a moment on the bench would help her cool down did not seem to be working and she decided that a cold shower would be best and made to stand until her mobile rang.
âMcGrath here.â
Hello, maâam, itâs Sergeant Anderson. Iâve just come on shift and thereâs been an accident in Munlochy, near one of the shops.â
âOkay,â said Hope, âhow can I help?â
âWell, a woman has been hit by a bus and sheâs in a bad way, on her way to Raigmore hospital. Itâs just that one of the boys at the scene clocked the address from her purse and thought it was similar to your DIâs home. I didnât want to disturb him with all thatâs going on especially if we are up a blind alley. Heâs so secretive about his personal life so I thought you might know.â
Hopeâs throat tightened. âWhatâs the address?â The Sergeant passed over the details. âHow bad?â asked Hope, realising that the address was indeed Macleodâs home.
âSheâs in a critical condition, Maâam. Iâll ring him directly.â
âNo, Sergeant, Iâm at his hotel. Iâll tell him myself.â Hope hung up and ran inside the hotel. Racing through the foyer in her Lycra, she saw Ross who gave her a strange stare. âFollow me,â she shouted and then tore up the stairs to the floor Macleodâs room was on.
